The area became a popular campground and recreation area in the early 1870's. To help people attend the Weirs races, city officials and local businessmen, worked closely with the railroad executives for their mutual interests. Funds were raised for a series of band concerts that were given every Sunday through Labor Day. By 1915, there were four express trains to the Weirs from Boston.
